MEDICAL SPA TIPS AND STRATEGIES

Medical Spa Advice from different perspectives

MY ADVICE FOR MEDICAL SPA'S ON VARYING PERSPECTIVES:

My advice for Medical Spa owners, whether you are a start-up or an existing business to know your population. Research on what people in your area are looking for? Cater to them and do not be a copy cat.

If you google or search for medspa's in your area it is not a surprise that there is so many of you. Yes, because the allure of a medical spa entices entrepreneurs and doctors alike as it brings in instant cash or profit. Although it sounds so easy, but in reality it is not.

Based on what I have experienced and seen, Medical spas that fail are those that are managed remotely, nurses are per diem (lack of focus), no doctor present during consults and poor follow-up after treatment.

MEDICAL SPA'S ARE MEDICAL PRACTICES

Let us remember a Medical Spa is a medical practice and as such it has to be staffed by competent clinicians. Competence starts from making sure that your staff has been trained on the technology theory, physics, tissue effects, safety, knowledge of controls and parameters, using treatment guide only as a reference, assessing their patients not just based on their Fitzpatrick skin types, skin tones, racial origin and much more.

FACTS ON THE GROUND:

During my last handful of visits to medical spa's throughout I have discovered so many Clinicians know very little about lasers. While in fact, success in treating with lasers depends on being able to manipulate every parameter available on the device to meet clinical endpoints.

procurement of your technology

The Aesthetics world typically has been dominated by name brands (you know them, I won't list them for legal purposes) but as you can see technology has evolved wherein if you asked me a Laser is a Laser (it has a laser head, which houses the cavity, rod (medium that gets excited), flash-lamp (for non semi-conductor lasers). So those that think that branded device is what attracts your patients then think again. Maybe if you are in an area where the average net worth of your clientele is in the millions such as Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Malibu, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach (I am only mentioning California here and this is just to set an example. ) Then most likely your patients after doing their research will not be spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a product that is unknown to them. As such in this case, a name brand will do. But for the majority of you who lack the capital and just there to make a living and make some money purchasing off-brand devices even Chinese or Korean made (barring if you know what you are looking for and is supported by your supplier, then let me tell you its not that bad.

Okay, I am not endorsing Chinese or Korean made devices here,  but did you know even the Germans or the Italians get their machines made partially in China due to their affordable labor, heck even the Koreans send theirs to China as I have visited factories so firsthand I know. Even companies here in the USA just rebrand Chinese manufactured devices and sell it their way. But no need to worry as the trust test lies on when you

demo the product and hopefully you get a person that has touched and is familiar with the device. So here's my tips before making a decision consider these:

  1. Knowledge of the product - does he or she know what the product is by being able to demonstrate how to turn-on the device, explain parameters, controls, modes of operation, how to prepare and set it for demonstration.
  2. Safety - does he or she provide the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as patient eye shields, laser goggles (for participants and observers)
  3. Presentation  Does he or she present in such a way that they are not just reading content of their slides and having difficulty answering questions (red flag)
  4. Manipulation of Device to assess reactions: During the demonstration are you getting the reaction from your models as expected or failing due to the fact that either settings are set too low or uncomfortably too high. Typical reactions to lasers include erythema, edema and some type of skin reaction.
  5. Legalities - Any guides provided (Pre, Post, Consent form template, charting form and other support documents to prevent negligence)
  6. Warranty Terms offered:

What does it cover? Length of standard warranty?  Do they offer extended

warranty? Do they offer parts coverage, field support, phone support, are they

accessible and available (most sellers that sell lack the support for their product

               and with limited resources)

If all of these boxes check out then it is safe to say that they are good bet. Well to be honest our company gives you the service of a BIG BRAND without the Big Brand Price.
